Trumpets, Timpani and the Birth of the Saviour at Christmas and New Year’s

The Advent in Hallgrimskirkja has been wonderful this year, with thrilling Christmas concerts every week and great artists like the Hallgrimskirkja Motet Choir, Schola Cantorum chamber choir, organist Bjorn Steinar Solbergsson and a German jazzduo performing. However, the annual Hallgrimskirkja Christmas Music Festival is not quite over yet. We still have two more magnificent concerts to go!

On December 27th organist Bjorn Steinar Solbergsson will perform Olivier Messiaen’s mystical and magnificent piece The Birth of the Saviour – Nine Contemplations for Organ, one of the most famous organ works ever written, on Hallgrimskirkja’s Klais-organ. The concert starts at 5 pm. The entrance fee is 2.500 ISK.

On New Year’s Eve there will be trumpets and timpani saluting the New Year, accompanied by the thundering Klais-organ. Trumpet players are Asgeir H. Steingrimsson, Eirikur Palsson and Einar St. Jonsson, organist is Bjorn Steinar Solbergsson and playing the timpani is Eggert Palsson. They will perform the works of Vivaldi, Purcell, Albinoni and more. It is a most popular concert and sensible to get tickets in advance. Admittance is 3.500 ISK and the concert starts at 5pm.

Tickets for both concerts can be bought at Hallgrimskirkja (tlf. 510 1000) and at the entrance.

The Hallgrimskirkja Friends of the Arts Society wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
