All Saints\u2018 day is celebrated on the first Sunday of November. It is a day of remembrance for the faithful – to reflect on and express gratitude for their loved ones who have died. Many beautiful sacred compositions – requiems, motets and hymns – are connected to this day. It has been a tradition for many years at Hallgr\u00edmskirkja to celebrate All Saints\u2018 day with a concert.<\/p>\n

In this year’s concert, Schola Cantorum, The Chamber Choir of Hallgr\u00edmskirkja, presents sacred compositions by contemporary composers known for their beautiful musical language, that connects the past and the present.<\/p>\n

The concert\u2018s leitmotif is Requiem,\u00a0 which will be performed in two different compositions by Sigur\u00f0ur S\u00e6varsson ( Premi\u00e9re) and the Norwegian composer Kjell M\u00f6rk Karlsen. Sigur\u00f0ur S\u00e6varsson wrote his Requiem in remembrance of his father and Kjell M\u00f6rk Karlsen’s Requiem is in memorial of his wife who passed away 2 years ago. A new work by Hugi Gu\u00f0mundsson will also be performed, it is written in memory of his beloved father Gu\u00f0mundur Hallgr\u00edmsson who was a great supporter of the arts at Hallgr\u00edmskirkja and died 3 years ago.<\/p>\n

All these compositions fit particularly well to the magnificent sound space of Hallgr\u00edmskirkja.\u00a0 Conductor is H\u00f6r\u00f0ur \u00c1skelsson.<\/p>\n

\"Choir<\/a><\/p>\n

Schola cantorum\u2019s latest album, MEDITATIO, has just been released by the Swedish label BIS. It includes expressive works for choir from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries which interpret grief and bereavement in the light of hope and comfort.<\/p>\n

Among the selected works are John Tavener\u2019s simple but stirring The Lamb, Eric Whitacre\u2019s unearthly Lux aurumque and two of the most beautiful Icelandic choir pieces ever written: Jon Leifs\u2019 Requiem for the young daughter he lost and Thorkell Sigurbjornsson\u2019s Heyr himna smi\u00f0ur (Hear Heaven\u2019s Maker), considered by many to be the most beautiful choral piece ever written in Iceland.
